Australia Post for Resellers — Rates, MyPost Business and Tips

Australia Post is the default for most Australian resellers. Here's how to use it as cost-effectively as possible.

Rate Structure

Australia Post prices parcels based on size and weight. Satchels (pre-paid, flat-rate) are often the most cost-effective: Small (up to 500g, approximately $9-10), Medium (up to 3kg, approximately $12-14), and Large (up to 5kg, approximately $16-18). For items that don't fit satchels, rates are calculated by cubic weight — measuring the dimensions and weight of your package. Cubic weight can be surprisingly high for bulky but light items.

MyPost Business Setup

Register at auspost.com.au/business. It's free and takes minutes. Once registered, you can print postage labels from home, access discounted rates, track all your parcels in one dashboard, and schedule pickups. The discount increases with volume — regular shippers save significantly over counter rates.

Optimising Packaging

Packaging weight and size directly affect cost. Use the smallest satchel or box that safely fits your item. Remove unnecessary packaging (extra cardboard, excessive bubble wrap). For clothing, satchels are almost always cheaper than boxes. For fragile items, balance protection against size — a larger package costs more.

Claiming Postage Costs

Every postage expense is fully deductible. Keep MyPost Business reports as evidence (they show every label purchased). If buyers pay shipping separately, declare that as income and claim the actual postage cost as a deduction. See our complete shipping guide and bookkeeping guide.
