Gaming Reselling in Australia — Consoles, Games and Tax

Gaming hardware holds value well in Australia. Here's how to build a profitable gaming reselling business.

What Gaming Items Resell Well

The strongest gaming resale categories include: retro consoles (Nintendo 64, GameCube, Game Boy — prices have increased dramatically), current-generation consoles (especially during supply shortages), sealed games (sealed retro games are particularly valuable), limited edition accessories, and gaming peripherals (quality controllers, headsets). The retro gaming market has exploded in recent years, with some rare games selling for hundreds or thousands of dollars.

Sourcing

Facebook Marketplace is the best source for gaming gear — sellers often list lot bundles (console + games + controllers) at prices well below individual resale values. Op shops occasionally have retro gaming finds, though this is becoming rarer as awareness grows. Trade-in stores (EB Games, Cash Converters) sometimes have underpriced items, and deceased estates can yield untouched retro collections.

Testing and Grading

Always test consoles before listing — confirm they power on, read discs, and controllers function. For games, "complete in box" (CIB) — game disc plus manual plus original case — commands significantly higher prices than loose discs. Sealed games are the most valuable but also the riskiest to authenticate (resealed games are a concern).

Tax as a Gaming Reseller

eBay is the dominant platform for gaming reselling in Australia. Regular sales clearly constitute a business. Track COGS per item — with individual games potentially worth $50-500+, accurate cost tracking is essential. See our eBay guide and reseller tax guide.
